About the lodge
History of the Legendary Lodge
Blue Horizon Lodge originally debuted in 1997 as a rustic family-run lodge, owned by Lincoln Westby and his wife, Perline. They built their ideal fishing lodge on Northeast Caye because of the proximity to the best permit fishery in the world. They both knew there was a better way to operate a permit fishing lodge that focused on fishing the best flats, during the most favorable tides. After years of working for other fishing lodges, Lincoln and Perline took their secret sauce to create an intimate fishing lodge for devoted permit anglers. Their goal was to create memories of great fishing while enjoying all the creature comforts a traveling angler would expect… great food, comfortable accommodations, hospitable staff, and the best permit fishing anywhere! Their legendary lodge was the talk of the permit community for decades, many guests have fished with our legendary guides, Lincoln, Marlon, Steve, and more.
Location. Location. Location.
It is common to see tailing permit in front of the lodge on the “home flat.” With numerous famous permit flats within a 10 minute boat ride, the action begins shortly after you step foot on the boat.
Because of the location of the lodge, our guides are the first boats on the flats each day. Other guides who bring anglers from the mainland, often arrive hours after you will have started your day of fishing. It is quite common for our guests to have already landed a permit before the first boats from the mainland arrive on the flats.
Fishing Schedule
For the past few years, we been taking an informal survey of what time of the day permit are caught. And to our surprise, most permit are hooked and landed after 7 am. This stat actually makes a lot of sense, and has to do with the angle of the sun. The higher the sun, the easier it is to see the permit. If you can see the fish better, you are more likely to making an accurate cast to that fish, reducing the likelihood of spooking them and increasing the chance they’ll eat your fly. Because of this knowledge, our team works smarter, not harder, departing the lodge between 6:30-7:30 am each day… depending on what the tide and weather are doing.
In past years, the team at Blue Horizon Lodge, ‘fished the tides, not the clock’, and some mornings the guides would even depart before the sun rises. You’ll find the team is less likely to depart for permit fishing at 5 am (they may still stir you for some early morning tarpon fishing in front of the lodge), as they’ve found, that they might get shots at tailing permit, they are more likely to spook those fish than catch them. The tide is still the master and our guides still plan their day to maximize the best available tides for permit, tarpon, and bonefish. You may start you day on the hunt for permit, then spot at a likely bonefish flat for a quick bend in the in the rod, before ending your day in tarpon waters.
Our team won’t force you to fish for a species or in a style you don’t like. Some of anglers prefer to ONLY fishing for permit, but many of our guests fish for all three species everyday.
